Daring Aerial Duel: Killer Whale Sends Dolphin Soaring 20ft High in California Encounter

Captured by 65-year-old environmental consultant Jodi Fredi, these stunning images reveal the intense encounter between the female Orca and the unfortunate dolphin. The spectacle unfolded about three miles from the shores of Santa Cruz, where Fredi resides.

The series of captivating shots portray the killer whale leaping out of the water, reminiscent of the iconic scene from the film Free Willy, as it forcefully strikes the dolphin with its fin. The airborne dolphin, captured mid-flip, is a testament to the raw and often brutal interactions within the animal kingdom.

Describing the fast-paced action, Jodi Fredi recounted, “The whale did a major tail throw, attempting to bat the unfortunate dolphin, and moments later, she came up from below flinging the dolphin through the air. The vision took my breath away, and according to the time stamp on my images, the toss took only one second.”

The sheer force of the impact caused the dolphin to soar through the air, creating a surreal and breathtaking moment. Fredi further explained that at high speeds, it is common for killer whales to use their heads to ram prey for a swift and efficient kill.

Often referred to as the “wolves of the sea” due to their pack-hunting nature, Orca whales are known for their strategic and coordinated hunting techniques. This extraordinary encounter captured by Fredi provides a glimpse into the captivating, albeit harsh, realities of marine life.
